Keeping people informed - July 24th shut-down
With a worldwide workforce and fabrication plants running 24/7, TI works it's hardware and software hard. Sometimes, though, you just need to shut 'er down and do a little maintenance. When that becomes necessary, people around the world need to know what's going on and when they can expect to have their systems back online.
Communication was part of my responsibility at TI, so when the time came to do several hours' worth of maintenance at our main data center, I needed to devise a plan to make sure all those people were aware of the maintenance ahead of time and kept informed about progress until it was over. Part of that plan was a micro-site.
Using a small dedicated website allowed me to keep email notifications short and sweet while still making all the details available. Additionally, we used a page of the site to post updates throughout the multi-hour maintenance window, giving people one place to check progress--good thing, too, since our email systems were down for maintenance!
